The tour assembles at Maidens Hotel. There will be opportunities
to relax, and an optional tour to Humayun’s tomb returning
via New Delhi and The Cottage Industries Emporium to do
some shopping. In the evening there will be an introductory
talk by Saul David to set the scene. |

St John’s Church Meerut |
Meerut
Prompt morning start to drive to Meerut where the Mutiny
really started. Here we shall see the scene of the outbreak
on the parade ground, St John’s garrison church and
graveyard, Captain Craigie’s House and Colonel Carmichael
Smyth’s House. |

Delhi
Today we shall visit
the mutiny sites in Delhi. Starting at the Flagstaff Tower
and Mutiny Monument on The Ridge. We shall then follow the
route of the main assault on Delhi. Passing Ludlow Castle
we shall proceed to The Kashmir Gate, then St James Church
and passing the Magazine reach the Red Fort. This was the
Palace of the Mughal King Bahadur Shah and thus a focus
for the mutineers.
We shall return to the
hotel via Brigadier John Nicholson’s tomb. |

Taj Mahal Agra |
Agra
We shall take the train to Agra, which at the time was the
British administrative headquarters for The North West Province.
We shall visit The Red Fort where the British community
took refuge during the Mutiny and see the tomb of Lieutenant
Governor John Colvin. Of course one cannot visit Agra without
seeing The Taj Mahal which we shall visit in the early evening
hoping for a good sunset. |

Gwalior
A short drive will take us to Gwalior one of the old princely
states and centre of Mahratta nationalism. The revolt of
The Gwalior Contingent was a significant point and it was
here that the final action of the Mutiny took place. We
shall be visiting the magnificent fort The Jai Vilas Palace
and museum. |

The Rani of Jhansi |
Jhansi
The Rani of Jhansi is rightly regarded by Indians as one
of the great heroes of The Mutiny. Today we shall visit
her palace and fort and hear the story of this formidable
opponent of British rule. We shall visit also the Jokanbagh
scene of the massacre of the British community at Jhansi.
In the evening we take the train to Kanpur and then the
short drive to Orcha. |

Orcha
Today we take a break from Mutiny sights to enjoy the beauty
and palaces of Orcha the former capital of Bundelkand. In
the afternoon we shall make the short journey to Kanpur |

Kanpur (Cawnpore)
Probably the most poignant day of the tour as we visit the
sites of General Wheeler’s heroic defence and the
subsequent massacre of the innocents. The events of Cawnpore
aroused the anger and hatred of the British towards the
mutineers more than any other incident and were widely reported
and illustrated in the English press. In the evening we
drive to Lucknow. |

Lucknow
Today we shall trace the route taken by Sir Colin Campbell’s
relief force as it moved through the city on its way to
his objective - The Residency. Sites to be taken in include
La Martiniere College, The Dilkusha Palace, The Kaiserbagh
and Secunderbagh Garden. |

The Residency Lucknow |
Lucknow
The ruins of The Residency at Lucknow remain as a memorial
to the heroic defence of the area by the British community
and their Indian allies. This day is the actual 150th anniversary
of the second and successful relief of the siege by Sir Colin
Campbell. We shall spend most of the day in The Residency
prior to taking a flight to Dehli |
