At Cawnpore (Kanpur), Nana Sahib - who had proclaimed himself Peshwa - managed to seize the fortress and its British Garrison, and massacred all the occupants. At Lucknow, the Mutiny began on 30th May 1857, but the English garrison was able to hang on at the residence until November, when troops arrived under the new commander - in - Chief from England, Sir Colin Campbell (later Lord Clyde), assisted by Jang Bahadur of Nepal with his strong contingent of Gorkhas. Only few sites of theses mutinies, battlefields, cemeteries and movement remain (1857 -1947), but story of these extraordinary episodes are equally exciting for both European and Indian.
